We would like opportunity to create a large new wildflower habitat on the Brackenhurst Campus, we want to do this because this will benefit all students as this will help with their wellbeing to have a beautiful space such as this on campus.

It will also greatly improve the educational experience of all those students on the relevant courses that are concerned with conservation. Firstly, they can apply or at least see an example of what they are being taught in the classroom. Also, agricultural students can benefit from this too and use it to learn about conservation techniques in an agricultural landscape, and those looking to do PhDs on this subject area can use this new habitat to collect data. This is also an opportunity for courses to cooperate with one another on land management, with help from the farm manager and lecturers etc.

This would also be a great marketing opportunity for the university to show the ingenuity of their students, how the university supports its students and their ideas and projects and how they like to involve their students in the management of the campus.

It would also help the green image of the university, creating habitat for the wildlife already on Brackenhurst and encouraging biodiversity. We could also calculate roughly how much carbon will be captured by this area.

If a large enough area is converted to wildflower area it will be notable in the wider landscape to public conservation organisations.

Students in conservation need to see example of what a great habitat looks like if they are to go out into management positions and replicate what they have been taught, if they don’t see great habitats around them then how will they know what to aim for in the management of other areas later in their conservation careers?

To do this we will need a field to be given over for this purpose by the university and seed will need to be purchased and then sown at the relevant time of year. A management plan must then be drawn up to establish how this area will be managed best for the students and wildlife for at least the next 5 years into the future.
